A few months after giving Google Photos a new icon, it looks like Gmail is next in line for an updated logo.
Google today teased a new icon for Gmail. An image shared from Google to 9to5Google shows a technical drawing that's likely teasing how the new Gmail icon is made. Because it's not detailed, we don't yet know exactly what the new icon will look like.
The teaser shows that the icon will include an "M", much like the current Gmail logo. There's much less of a focus on the envelope that the existing Gmail icon has, though. That could be a nod to the fact that Gmail has become more than just email lately, adding in features like Meet and Chat, among others.
It's also worth noting that many of Google's other app icons incorporate the company's four main colors — red, green, yellow, and blue — but the current Gmail app does not. Those four colors could be included with the final design of this new Gmail icon.
Google hasn't said when it will fully unveil a new Gmail icon.
A new icon for Gmail might not seem like a big deal, but this is a major service that's used by millions of people around the world. Making a new icon that all of those people are going to see every day, including on the home screens of their smartphones, isn't something to be taken lightly for Google. And so we're looking forward to seeing what Google cooks up for its new Gmail icon.
