As expected, ZTE today took the wraps off of the Axon 20 5G, the first smartphone with an under-display camera.
The ZTE Axon 20 5G features a 6.92-inch 2460x1080 OLED display and a 32MP selfie camera. ZTE touts that it's using five "core technologies" to ensure that the under-display selfie camera performs well, such as new organic and inorganic films that help get more light to the camera.
ZTE is also using an "independent dual-control chip" and "integrated driver circuits" to avoid interference, plus a "special matrix" to optimize pixels and make a smooth transition between using the camera and normal use of the display. Finally, a "front-camera selfie algorithm" aims optimize the camera performance.
The Axon 20 5G also has four cameras on its backside, including a 64MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide snapper with 120-degree field of view. There are 2MP depth and 2MP macro cameras on the phone's backside, too.
Inside ZTE's new flagship is a Snapdragon 765G processor paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. There's 128GB or 256GB of included storage, a microSD slot that supports cards up to 2TB, and a 4220mAh battery that can be recharged at up to 30W speeds using Quick Charge 4+ tech.
ZTE has packed fingerprint reader underneath the Axon 20 5G's display, too, and it's including 5G support, NFC, and USB-C charging, too.
The Axon 20 5G is now available for pre-order in China at a price of RMB 2,198 ($322 USD). There's no word yet on when or if ZTE will release the Axon 20 5G in other parts of the globe.
An under-display camera is a pretty attractive feature because it gives you your whole display, no notch or hole-punch taking away screen real estate, and there's no motorized camera pop-up mechanism to worry about either. The one concern with an under-display camera is whether it can perform as well as a camera that's not sitting under a screen, but ZTE seems confident that that won't be an issue.
