The SHIELD TV is one of the best Android TV devices on the market thanks in part to NVIDIA's regular updates, and today another new update has been released.
NVIDIA today launched SHIELD Software Experience Upgrade 8.2, which the company notes is the 25th upgrade that the original SHIELD TV is getting. That's an impressive figure for any device, and it's a reminder that the SHIELD TV devices are definitely worth a look if you're in the market for a new Android TV set-top box.
Getting into the update itself, NVIDIA has improved the AI upscaling feature for the 2019 SHIELD TVs that adds more 4K UHD upscaling support from 360p to 1440p content. Plus, 2019 SHIELD TV Pro models are getting support for 60fps content, too. And in the weeks ahead, NVIDIA will add 4K 60fps upscaling to GeForce NOW.
Also included in this update is custom double press and long press actions for the SHIELD remote. Previously you could only assign an action to a single press, so now the SHIELD remote can support three different customizable actions.
The new update brings improved IR and CEC volume control support, including with digital projectors, allowing functionality when the SHIELD isn't active. The update adds IR volume control when using the SHIELD TV app, too, and when you've paired your Google Home with SHIELD. The 2019 SHIELD remote is also getting IR control to change the input source on TVs, AVRs, and soundbars.
Finally, earlier SHIELD generations (both 2015 and 2017 models) now have the ability to match the frame rate of the content they're displaying, and native SMBv3 support is included for faster and more secure connections between a PC and a SHIELD. NVIDIA says that SMBv3 now works without requiring a PLEX media server as well.
If you've got a NVIDIA SHIELD TV, you should see this update starting its rollout today. While you wait, you can find NVIDIA's full changelog for the update here.
