Have a Sonos speaker or three around your house? If so, then today's a big day for you.
Sonos today released its new S2 app, which the company says offers support for higher resolution audio technologies like Dolby Atmos on the Sonos Arc. The new app also features increased security and an "improved design for easier use," says Sonos, starting with new features like saved room groups.
The new Sonos app is available on Android and iOS.
You can use this new app to control most recent Sonos speakers, but there are a few older speakers that aren't supported. For those devices, you'll need the older Sonos app that's now called the Sonos S1 Controller. It can be found on Android and iOS as well.
This app is meant for use with Sonos devices like the Zone Players, Play:5 (Gen 1), Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), and Connect:Amp (Gen 1).
Sonos says that the S1 Controller app will not receive any new features or services and that it's not compatible with Sonos devices released after May 2020.
Sonos made waves earlier this year when it said it would stop updating its older "legacy" products. Owners of older and newer Sonos products were concerned that if they had a system that included both, their newer devices would stop getting updates too. Offering two different apps is Sonos's solution to the problem, letting customers control their older devices while launching a new app that can bring new features for the more recent devices.
