The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro officially launch tomorrow, but if you were thinking about buying an unlocked 8 or 8 Pro model for use on Verizon, you may want to hold off.
Several folks who already have an unlocked OnePlus 8 Pro are having issues with getting the device to work smoothly on Verizon. There are complaints on Reddit and the OnePlus forums from people who say they're having issues with calling or texting. Data is working for some, but calling and texting are both pretty important features for a phone to have.
OnePlus has told Android Police that these issues are happening because it still needs to submit more information to Verizon. Some Verizon customers are being told by the carrier's support that the unlocked OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro IMEIs need to be submitted to Verizon by OnePlus so that Verizon can mark the unlocked devices as being compatible with its network.
What's also notable is that on in the carrier compatibility section of the spec lists for the unlocked OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, Verizon support is listed as "n/a".
OnePlus doesn't have an exact date that the unlocked 8 or 8 Pro will be fully supported on Verizon. "Our OnePlus 8 series open market phones in North America will not be compatible with Verizon until June at the latest," the company said to AP. OnePlus added that the OnePlus 8 5G UW that's launching at Verizon on April 29th will be functional right away.
It's kind of strange that OnePlus hasn't gotten the unlocked OnePlus 8 series phones working on Verizon yet because while this is the first time that a OnePlus phone is officially launching on Verizon, devices like the unlocked OnePlus 6T and OnePlus 7 Pro were certified for use on Verizon. So this is the first time that OnePlus and Verizon have worked together. The OnePlus 8 Pro doesn't technically launch for another couple of days, so hopefully the two companies get this situation ironed out soon.
