Rumors have said that Verizon will officially launch the OnePlus 8 with 5G support, and now some more evidence that that release is happening has come out.
An update to the OnePlus Launcher, version 4.33, includes a few references to Verizon that support rumors that the OnePlus 8 will hit the big red carrier's shelves. The folks at XDA-Developers note that there's a string for a folder named "Verizon" that would likely hold apps preinstalled by Verizon on every device:
"<string name="verizon_folder_title">Verizon</string>"
There's also a method called "isVerizon" in the SkuHelper class that would return true if the software type is Verizon. That means that the Verizon OnePlus 8 will likely have separate software from the unlocked OnePlus 8, just like the T-Mobile and Sprint OnePlus phones.
Lastly, a DeviceHelper class switch statement includes a mention of "OnePlus8VZW" along side "OnePlus8TMO" and other devices.
OnePlus originally only sold its phones direct to consumers, but in the past couple of years we've seen OnePlus phones launch on T-Mobile and Sprint, too. OnePlus has become a fairly well-known company among mobile enthusiasts, but a launch a Verizon could really help OnePlus become known among the regular consumers.
Verizon is considerably larger than T-Mo and Sprint, often trading with AT&T for the title of the U.S.'s biggest carrier, and most U.S. consumers still buy their phones direct from their carrier. Because of this, having a phone in Verizon stores would be a big deal for OnePlus.
In other OnePlus 8 news, today's report also points out an "NFC Customization Wallpaper" feature mentioned in the code of the new OnePlus Launcher app. Little is known about it, but the name suggests you'll be able to get new wallpapers by scanning an NFC tag.
Recent rumors have said that the OnePlus 8 series could be announced in mid-April.
UPDATE: Also of note is that OnePlus has posted some job listings for things like Marketing Director and Director of Direct Sales in Bedminster, NJ, which is around a 15 minute drive from Verizon's operations headquarters in Basking Ridge, NJ.
"As a Marketing Director, you will develop and execute the connected mobile device marketing strategies for a key carrier in the US market," reads one of the job listings.
Thanks Albert!
