It seems like every year we're seeing an increase in the amount of RAM that's crammed into high-end smartphones, and today Samsung has announced how it's aiding in that effort.
Samsung has begun mass production of a 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM package for smartphones. This package consists of eight 12-gigabit (Gb) chips and four 8Gb chips. With it, smartphones will have twice the DRAM capacity of some higher-end laptops and even some gaming PCs.
The data transfer rate for the 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM package is 5,500Mbps, which is 1.3 times faster than the LPDDR4X memory. Samsung also touts that its new 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM package offers more than 20% energy savings compared to an 8GB LPDDR4X package while also boasting double the capacity.
All of that speedy RAM will be useful in helping smartphones keep up as mobile networks get faster with 5G and applications get more power-intensive.
There's no word on exactly when we'll start seeing these 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM modules appearing in smartphones, but with mass production underway, we may not have long to wait.
