The new system-wide dark mode was a major new addition to Android 10, and now it sounds like it may get even better with the next big Android release.
Android 11 may include dark mode scheduling. In the Google Issue Tracker, there's a request for the ability to schedule dark mode to come on automatically at certain times, like at sunrise and sunset. The issue was originally filed back in June, but as spotted by XDA-developers, a Google employee recently marked the issue as fixed and said the feature is coming in a future Android update.
"This issue reported here has been fixed and it will become available in a future Android release," says the Google worker.
There actually was a scheduling feature for dark mode in the early beta releases of Android 10, but it didn't make the cut into the final release. A Google employee explained earlier this year that such a feature requires a request for location permissions and even then could be buggy because calculating sunrise and sunset times can be difficult.
Now it sounds like Google has figured out a way to get dark mode scheduling working. That's great news because it's a super handy feature in iOS 13 that means you won't have to fumble around to toggle dark mode on or off manually, like when you're using your device at night and get blinded by a bright white screen.
