After launching the Galaxy Fold that opens up like a book, Samsung could be thinking about changing up the form factor of its next foldable device.
During its Samsung Developer Conference 2019 keynote, Samsung teased a new clamshell foldable phone form factor. The company didn't say much about when or if this foldable device might launch to the public, saying only that it's a design that it's now exploring.
"With the Galaxy Fold, we created a device that expands the experience when it unfolds. It instantly gives you more space to work and play. But the amazing thing with foldable technology is that it can also become more compact, like this," said Sally Hyesoon Jeong, Samsung's VP of Framework R&D Group for Mobile Communications. "This brand new form factor we're now exploring will not only easily fit in your pocket but it also changes the way you use your phone, even when you take photos and videos."
The first few foldable phones we've seen have opened like a book, giving you a large tablet-like screen when you open them up. This Samsung device is more like a clamshell flip phone and could take up a bit less space in your pocket when closed. And then when open, you may get a tall screen that's more similar to the smartphone displays we have today and could be good for watching video on the go.
Samsung isn't the only company thinking about a clamshell-style foldable phone. Motorola is hosting an event on November 13th, and it's expected that the company will show a foldable RAZR phone with a clamshell form factor there.
