HBO Max was first announced nearly four months ago, but at the time, WarnerMedia wasn't spilling many details about the new service. Now more details have come out.
Launching in May 2020, HBO Max will be priced at $14.99 per month. Customers who subscribe to HBO through AT&T will get access to HBO Max for no extra charge, and HBO Now subscribers who get their service directly through HBONow.com will also get HBO Max.
HBO Max will have 10,000 hours of content at launch. That includes the entirety of HBO as well as HBO Max original content like Looney Tunes Cartoons, five new comedy specials from Conan O'Brien, and new shows from Issa Rae and Mindy Kaling. HBO is also working on a show called House of the Dragon, a 10-episode prequel to Game of Thrones based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood.
There will be several well-known existing series available on HBO Max in its first year, too. All 23 seasons of South Park will arrive on HBO Max in June 2020 with three new seasons to follow, and all seasons of Rick and Morty are coming to the service as well. Some of the other notable series coming to HBO Max include The O.C., The West Wing, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Big Bang Theory, and a collection of shows from Looney Tunes and Hannah Barbara.
When it comes to features of the actual service, HBO Max will include a "Recommended By Humans". This feature will have talent and influencers making short videos to talk about content they love and think that you'll like. A co-viewing feature will let you create a shared homepage for watching shows with another person, complete with shared watch lists, and they won't impact your personal page or recommendations.
HBO Max will also offer features like kids profiles, parental PIN usage, and downloads for offline listening.
