We're starting to see a lot of phones to come market with 48MP rear cameras, but today Xiaomi announced that it's one-upping all those models with its new Redmi Note 8 Pro.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has four rear cameras, including a 64MP main snapper. It uses the Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor that uses a Tetracell pixel-merging algorithm to produce 16MP images. Xiaomi's new Redmi Note 8 Pro also includes an 8MP wide angle camera with a 120-degree field of view, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor.
Also packed into the Redmi Note 8 Pro is MediaTek's 2.05GHz octa-core Helio G90T processor, 6/8GB of RAM, 64/128GB of built-in storage, and a 4500mAh battery, which is the largest in a Redmi phone to date. The screen is a 6.53-inch FHD+ camera with a notch where the 20MP selfie camera lives, and there's also a USB-C port with 18W fast charging, NFC, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and IP52 splashproofing.
And then there's the standard Redmi Note 8. While it doesn't have the same 64MP snapper as its sibling, it does have a quad camera setup of its own with a 48MP main camera. It's also equipped with a Snapdragon 665 processor, 4/6GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, and a 6.3-inch screen with a notch and a 13MP selfie cam. There's USB-C charging and a 3.5mm headphone jack, too.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro will be available for pre-order in China on August 29 and it'll launch on September 3, with pricing starting at RMB 1,399 ($196 USD) for the 6GB/64GB model and going up to RMB 1,799 ($252 USD) for the top-end 8GB/128GB version. The standard Redmi Note 8 will be available for pre-order on September 10 and launch one week later, and it's pricing will start at RMB 999 ($140 USD) for the 4GB/64GB model and top out at RMB 1,399 for the 6GB/128GB model.
We'll have to wait until we try the Redmi Note 8 Pro for ourselves before making any judgments about its camera performance, but getting a quad cam setup with a 64MP main snapper, a 6.53-inch screen, and a 4500mAh battery for around $200 seems like a pretty nice deal. Unfortunately, there's no word on when or if the Redmi Note 8 Pro or Redmi Note 8 will launch outside of China, so for now we'll have to wait and see if Xiaomi brings that 64MP camera elsewhere.
