Samsung isn't the only company announcing new smartwatch hardware today.
Fossil today introduced its new Gen 5 smartwatch in two models: Carlyle for men and Julianna for women. Both Wear OS watches have a 44mm case, but the Carlyle is offered in silver and black colors while the Julianna is offered in a rose gold color and has a couple versions with a bejeweled bezel.
Both watches include new features like a speaker and a proprietary Fossil app that lets these Gen 5 watches make and answer phone calls while tethered to an iPhone. Android users can send and receive calls, too, and Fossil says that they'll get a more seamless transition between Bluetooth devices when taking calls on their watch. The ability to send and receive calls from an iPhone is coming to the Gen 5 watches later this fall.
Fossil is also including a special app that'll get you access to four custom battery modes: Daily, Extended, Time-only, and Custom, letting you tweak your watch to get more battery life if you're going to be away from the charger for awhile. "Extended battery mode unlocks multi-day usage by keeping on essential features such as notifications and heart rate on a single, one-hour charge," touts Fossil.
When it comes to raw specs, both Gen 5 watches include Qualcomm's Snapdragon 3100 processor, 8GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, a heart rate monitor, and GPS. There's an NFC for Google Pay mobile payments in there, too. The case itself water resistant to 3ATM, and Fossil says that it's included a swimproof speaker as well. The watches support 22mm interchangeable straps.
Both the Carlyle and Julianna smartwatches are now available for pre-order for $295.
