Samsung today announced another major RAM milestone.

Samsung has begun mass production of 12-gigabit LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, which it touts is an industry first. This RAM is optimized for 5G and AI features in future smartphones, and Samsung says that it's meant for "future flagships".

Digging into the nitty-gritty details, this 12Gb LPDDR5 RAM offers a data rate of 5500Mb/s, which is 1.3 times faster than the LPDDR4X RAM that's found in today's high-end phones. When used in a 12GB package, the LPDDR5 RAM can transfer 44GB of data in one second. The new chip  also uses a new circuit design that helps it to use up to 30 percent less power than its predecessor.

This new LPDDR5 RAM sounds impressive, and we're looking forward to seeing it in flagship phones. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we'll see it in the upcoming Galaxy Note 10. That device will probably be powered by a Snapdragon 855, and neither the SD855 nor the SD855 Plus support LPDDR5 RAM.
