Google I/O 2019 doesn't kick off until tomorrow, but Google just couldn't wait until then to share some Android Auto news.
Android Auto is getting a new design that aims to help you get on the road faster, show more useful info at a glance, and simplify common tasks, all meant to help keep you informed and in control while also being safe on the road. The new design will roll out to all Android Auto cars later this summer.
With this new-look Android Auto, your media will continue playing as soon as you start your car and you'll be greeted by your navigation app of choice. There's a new notification center that'll show recent calls, messages, and alerts, and a new navigation bar will let you see your turn-by-turn directions as well as control your apps and phone, all on the same screen, while also giving you easy control of your apps with one tap.
Android Auto is getting a new color palette that'll be easier on your eyes, which includes a dark theme as well as colorful accents and easier to read fonts, which ought to help improve visibility. Google also notes that Android Auto will now maximize to fit car displays with wider screens, enabling it to show you more information like next-turn directions, playback controls, and ongoing calls.
Car-focused user interfaces like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are important as people continue to rely on their smartphone for navigation, in-car entertainment, and communications. While screens on phones are getting bigger, it can still be difficult and potentially dangerous to try and control them from behind the wheel. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay offer a bigger UI with better visibility, letting you stay connected and safe while you're driving. It's great to see Google continue to improve Android Auto, especially as more vehicles become equipped with the user interface.
