Apple is likely to spill some of the first iOS 13 details at WWDC in June, but before then, the rumor mill has some info to share about the update.
iOS 13 will reportedly include a system-wide dark mode for the iPhone and iPad. That's according to a report from 9to5Mac, which adds that iOS 13 will have a new volume HUD that'll replace the current obtrusive version, a redesigned Reminders app, better multilingual support for keyboards and dictation, and better "Hey Siri" rejection for noises like laughter and crying babies.
iOS 13 is also expected to include several new iPad-specific features. This includes multitasking improvements like the ability for apps to have multiple windows. Each window will be able to contain sheets that are attached to a part of the screen but can be detached by dragging it, letting you drag the card around freely. These cards can also be stacked on top of each other.
iPad users are expected to get a new undo gesture for text with iOS 13, too, letting you undo by tapping on the keyboard area with three fingers. You can also swipe left and right to undo and redo. Another iPad feature coming with iOS 13 will enable Safari to automatically ask for the desktop version of a site rather than the iPhone version.
Other notable features said to be coming with iOS 13 include an upgraded Mail app that'll organize email into categories like marketing and purchases, new gestures that'll let you select multiple items in table and collection views, and the ability for developers to use a different status bar style, either light or dark, for each side-by-side app running in Split View.
Apple will likely give us our first official taste of iOS 13 at WWDC in early June, followed by a public launch in the fall. The update to iOS 12 placed a major focus on improving performance on iOS devices, so the new features of iOS 13 will be welcome. The system-wide dark mode will likely be a big hit, especially with owners of iOS devices that have OLED screens since that dark mode could help save battery life. The iPad improvements sound great, too, and they could help the iPad function more as a full-on computer replacement for some people.
