Rich Communication Services (RCS) has gotten a pretty slow rollout in the U.S., with Sprint adopting it and T-Mobile only offering it on a few different devices. This week, though, another carrier will be getting on board with RCS.
Verizon has confirmed that it will deploy RCS support to the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL on December 6. Those are the only phones on Verizon that'll get RCS to start, but the carrier says that it plans to bring the enhanced messaging to more phones in the future.
Here's Verizon's full statement to The Verge:
"Verizon and Google will be rolling out enhanced messaging (RCS) in the Messages app on Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL beginning this Thursday, December 6th. This messaging service brings, for example, typing indicators, very large group chats and the ability to transfer large files between the owners of these smartphones."
RCS is a big improvement over standard SMS text messaging, and starting this week, Verizon Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 owners will get features like typing indicators, read receipts, and support for sending large attachments in the built-in Messages app. The other person that you're chatting with does need to have RCS for the features to work, but still, it's good to see RCS spreading a bit more in the U.S. and getting support from Verizon.
