Amazon has suffered a data leak.
The retailer is now sending emails to affected customers, letting them know that the Amazon website "inadvertently disclosed" their email address. The technical issue has been fixed, Amazon says, adding that those affected don't need to change their password.
Here's the full text of the email:
"Hello,
We're contacting you to let you know that our website inadvertently disclosed your email address due to a technical error. The Issue has been fixed. This is not a result of anything you have done, and there is no need for you to change your password or take any other action.
Sincerely,
Customer Service
http://Amazon.com"
There's little else known about the issue, as Amazon isn't explaining exactly what happened, how many accounts were affected, or much of anything else. The company did tell The Verge that neither its website nor any of its systems were breached and that it has "fixed the issue and informed customers who may have been impacted."
It's good that Amazon is informing customers affected by this data leak, but the email is strangely brief. Having a techincal issue that leaks customer info is a pretty serious issue, even if it's only their email address, and it'd be good to get more details about exactly what happened.
Did you get an email from Amazon saying that your email address has been exposed?
