5G is a big focus in mobile right now, and this week Samsung made some 5G news of its own.
Samsung has announced the Exynos Modem 5100, which includes support for the 5G New Radio (5G NR) standard. The Exynos Modem 5100 works with sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums and offers a max downlink speed of 2Gbps using sub-6GHz spectrum and up to 6Gbps using mmWave spectrum.
In addition to offering 5G support, Samsung's new Exynos Modem 5100 includes 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE support. Using 4G connectivity, it can offer speeds up to 1.6Gbps.
Samsung says that its Exynos Modem 5100 will be available by the end of 2018. It's unclear when we'll begin to see devices equipped with the Exynos Modem 5100 come to market, but we should begin seeing the first 5G smartphones launch in 2019, so it's possible that some devices with the Exynos Modem 5100 will hit the market next year.
