We've been hearing for years now that Samsung is prepping a foldable smartphone, and now a new report claims that it could finally launch next year.
Samsung is planning to launch a foldable smartphone in early 2019, according to sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal. The device is reportedly codenamed "Winner" and features a 7-inch screen that can be folded in half. When folded, the phone is said to have a small exterior display bar on the front and cameras on the back.
It's expected that Samsung will target smaller, specific markets like mobile gamers with this foldable phone at first, which could set the stage for a larger rollout in the second half of 2019. Samsung doesn't expect to sell a ton of these phones, according to tipsters, but it wants to be the first to launch a foldable screen smartphone.
As you might expect, a smartphone with a large, foldable screen isn't going to be cheap. Today's report says that the price of Samsung's foldable smartphone "could easily surpass $1,500" and would likely be even higher than that. But hey, no one ever said being an early adopter was cheap.
Samsung's foldable smartphone sounds like a cool idea, giving you a device with a huge screen in a footprint that should be considerably smaller than something like a 7-inch tablet. The small external display could help give you info while the phone is closed, too, making it so you don't have to open your device just to check a notification or see the time. We'll have to wait and see exactly how Samsung's "Winner" actually works before we get too excited, though.
Are you looking forward to the launch of Samsung's foldable phone?
