Corning is known as the company behind Gorilla Glass, the glass that's used on many smartphones, and today the company introduced its newest version of Gorilla Glass.
Gorilla Glass 6 is Corning's newest mobile-focused glass product. It's up to two times better at surviving drops than Gorilla Glass 5, with Gorilla Glass 6 surviving 15 drops from 1 meter onto rough surfaces. Gorilla Glass 6 was also improved to better meet the all-glass designs that we're seeing on more smartphones lately.
“Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically strengthened to give it significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5. This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage,” said Corning's Dr. Jaymin Amin. “Moreover, with breaks during drops being a probabilistic event, the added compression helps increase, on average, the likelihood of survival through multiple drop events.”
Corning says that Gorilla Glass 6 is expected to begin appearing in devices in the coming months.
