We’re nearly three years out from the launch of the original Amazon Echo, and reports are starting to swirl suggesting that a follow-up device is in the works.
Amazon is working on a new Echo that’s shorter and thinner than the existing Echo, says a source speaking to Engadget. The new-look Echo is also expected to have rounder edges and an exterior that’s covered in cloth rather than plastic.
Internally, the new Amazon Echo is expected to gain several tweeters for improved sound. The existing Echo only offers one tweeter and one woofer. Also reportedly getting improved in the new Echo is its microphone performance, which should result in the device being able to hear you better when you speak to it.
It’s surprising that it’s taken Amazon as long as it has to prep a new version of the Echo, but it’s good to hear that another version is indeed in the works. While we’ll have to wait until the new Echo is official before we know for sure what features it’ll offer, today’s rumor makes it sound like a follow-up, especially the part about improved sound.
