Depending on where you look, there are a lot of rumors regarding the iPhones Apple plans on launching later this year. The company itself hasn't announced anything at all yet, of course, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from spitting out just about anything it can in regards to features and specifications on a regular basis.

One of the key elements is that Apple isn't going to just launch a follow up to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. That means we're going to see another phone on top of the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus that are rumored to be unveiled this year. That extra handset is supposedly the true flagship of 2017: the iPhone 8.

It's also being called the iPhone Edition and the iPhone X, and it's supposedly going to adopt a plethora of features that have been rumored for the iPhone lineup for years. That includes adopting an OLED display, adding support for wireless charging, and more.

Basically what we've seen on Android devices for a long time already.

A lot of these rumors are going to become true just by default eventually, because they are so lackluster that it's just a matter of time before it happens. Yes, it will be great for iPhone fans when they finally get an iPhone with an OLED screen, and yes, it'll be awesome when they get standard wireless charging support. In the grand scheme of things, the majority of these rumors are just boiled down to, "It's about time."

But there's one piece of speculation that has caught my eye. One rumor has pegged the iPhone 8 starting at $1,000, and going up from there. There's some questions swirling regarding how many different variations there will be, but the shaky consensus at this point seems to be that there will be two: A 64GB model and a 256GB variant.

So the 64GB iPhone 8 is rumored to start at $1,000, which means that the 256GB option could retail for $1,200 -- unless Apple breaks the consistency of its pricing and charges $1,100 for a significant upgrade in built-in storage. Either way, any one of these options is expensive.

If it were simply a rumor by itself, there might not be much to stand on. But there have also been analyst reports detailing their cost expectations for different aspects of the upcoming flagship iPhone, from the inclusion of an OLED panel, different modules, the new "enhanced" camera, and more. Plus, this is an anniversary model, and Apple may see it as a sort of special edition variant.

(This also means they'll probably be ridiculously hard to come by, depending on production issues that might, or still might, pop up.)

Samsung has a Galaxy S8 variant, which features 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage, that is priced at $1,018. I think the existence of this phone, despite maybe not having a global launch (at least not soon), is a harbinger for what might be coming down the pipe from Apple, too. Of all the rumors out there, the inclusion of an OLED front panel and that high price tag are the ones I'm pretty sure might be the real deal.

It's also possible that the 64GB iPhone 8 costs $969 and the other iPhone 8 variant retails for $1,069 or just a bit more. Right now you can buy a 256GB iPhone 7 Plus for $969. For this scenario to happen, though, I think Apple would have to drop the cost of its iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models, by at least $100 for each variant. I don't necessarily think that's impossible, because it would also spur even more buyers to go with those handsets, especially if they can't readily get their hands on the iPhone 8.

So I'm wondering just how much you're willing to spend on a smartphone. Payment plans from carriers (and Apple) may make it easier to obtain, but are you still willing to fork over that kind of cash for a smartphone?
