It’s official: Samsung will soon permanently kill the remaining Galaxy Note 7 devices in use in the US.

Samsung announced today that it will distribute an update to Galaxy Note 7 phones in the US that will prevent them from charging and “eliminate their ability to work as mobile devices.” The update will be released on December 19 and will be distributed to all devices within 30 days. 

Samsung and the US carriers will be alerting Note 7 users about the recall and the impending update, urging them to return their phone and take advantage of the offers that are available.

Finally, Samsung said that more than 93 percent of all recalled Galaxy Note 7 phones in the US have been returned so far.

This news isn’t terribly surprising considering that Samsung has already announced similar updates to Note 7 phones in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Now that the update has been confirmed for the US, anyone still using a Note 7 should begin looking for another device to replace their potentially dangerous phablet.
