UPDATE: Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap Inc. (the new name of Snapchat’s company), has confirmed the existence of Spectacles to the Wall Street Journal. The sunglasses will launch this fall for $129.99 and will be available in black, teal, and coral color options.
Spectacles offer a camera with a 115-degree-angle lens and will record up to 10 seconds of video when you tap on a button near the hinge. The video that you capture will sync wirelessly to your smartphone.
According to a newly-leaked video, Snapchat is going to get into the wearables game.
A new video shows Spectacles, a pair of sunglasses made by Snapchat that have a camera and flash, letting you capture Snapchat photos and videos from your perspective. The video shows that when you begin recording, a ring around the camera flashes. We can also see a yellow ring around the camera and flash that’s likely a sort of subtle Snapchat logo.
This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen smart glasses. Google Glass was announced way back in 2012, offering wearers a heads-up display and a camera. Despite being backed by Google, though, Glass never gained much traction. It remains to be seen if Snapchat’s Spectacles will have better success, but the Spectacles do address one of the complaints of Google Glass in that they have a bright light that makes it clear to everyone around that they’re recording.
There’s no word on when the Spectacles might launch, if they ever do, or how much they might cost. Unsurprisingly, Snapchat had no comment on this leaked video. However, there is a Snapchat ghost with Spectacle-like eyes on the front of a building on Wall Street in New York City, suggesting that an official announcement could be close.
