Now that the Galaxy Note 7 is official, the rumor mill is turning its attention to the Galaxy S8.
A new report claims to have details on the Galaxy S8’s model numbers and codenames. Sources speaking to SamMobile say that Samsung’s two Galaxy S8 phones are codenamed Dream and Dream2 and carry the model numbers SM-G950 and SM-G955, respectively.
To compare, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are SM-G930 and SM-G935. “But what about SM-G940?” you ask. It’s suggested that Samsung could be skipping the SM-G940 model number over tetraphobia, an avoidance of the number 4 due to the belief that it’s bad luck.
In other Galaxy S8 news, analysts say that Samsung could be moving up the launch of its next Galaxy S flagship in response to the Galaxy Note 7 recall. The goal would be to get the Galaxy S8 out earlier than normal and take attention away from the Note 7, which is being recalled due to faulty batteries than can catch fire.
It’s unclear when the Galaxy S8 could launch if it is released early. The Galaxy S7 debuted in late February, so if these reports are true, we could see the Galaxy S8 near the start of February rather than the end.
Spec details for the Galaxy S8 are still unknown, but it’s been suggested that Samsung will ditch the flat-screened option that it’s offered in recent years and give both Galaxy S8 models curved displays.
