Snapchat and Instagram are currently two of the biggest applications in mobile, and according to a new report, Apple may be prepping its own version of those apps.
Apple is reportedly working on a video sharing app that’ll let users capture video, put filters and drawings on it, and send it to contacts and social media networks. That’s according to sources speaking to Bloomberg, who say that the app is still in the “preliminary development stages” and that Apple is aiming for a 2017 release, though the app could end up getting killed.
Other rumored features of this video sharing app is that the goal for Apple is to make it so that you can capture, edit, and upload a video in less than one minute, all with one hand. One of the prototype designs of the app captures square videos, similar to Instagram.
We’ll have to wait and see if Apple end up releasing this rumored video sharing app, but it makes sense that they’d be looking into creating such an app. Snapchat and Instagram are both huge right now — they’re currently the seventh and eighth-ranked apps in the Top Free list of Apple’s App Store — and Instagram recently released its own Stories feature that’s very similar to Snapchat’s feature of the same name. With this kind of popularity, it’s no surprise that Apple is thinking about how it can get a slice of the pie for itself.
Apple is also reportedly looking at improving the “proactive suggestions” feature that’s currently in iOS and recommends contacts, apps, and places of interest based on your location and time of day. Apple wants to beef up this feature by making sharing something with contacts a system-wide feature. Also reportedly in the works is a way for two contacts to see all of their communications with each other — email, texts, social networking interactions — in a single window.
