Project Fi offers a few special features, like data usage by the gigabyte, coverage that includes several U.S. networks, and Wi-Fi Assistant. Starting today, though, that last one is no longer a Project Fi exclusive.

Google announced today that it’s making Wi-Fi Assistant available to all Nexus users with compatible devices in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the U.K., and Nordic countries. The feature, which is compatible with devices running Android 5.1 and up, will hit Nexus owners over the next few weeks.

Wi-Fi Assistant is a feature that aims to help you stay connected in places where your cellular coverage may not be strong. With it, your phone will automatically and securely connect to open Wi-Fi networks that Google has verified as fast and strong. With it, you’ll connect to Wi-Fi rather than struggle with a poor cellular connection, ensuring that your web browsing or whatever else you’re doing isn’t interrupted.

This is a pretty nifty feature, and it’s nice to see Google rolling it out to all Nexus users after it spent some time as a Project Fi exclusive. Nexus devices already offer benefits like speedy software updates and guaranteed Android version updates for two years, and now they can add Wi-Fi Assistant to their list of highlights, too.
