While Xiaomi is primarily known for its smartphones, it makes lots of other devices, including headphones, wearables, and even laptops. Today the company introduced its latest non-smartphone product, a virtual reality headset.
The Mi VR Play is Xiaomi’s first virtual reality headset. It’s made with lycra so that it’s comfortable to have on your face, and the Mi VR Play includes anti-reflective lenses that Xiaomi says provide “the best image clarity.”
Around front, the Mi VR Play has a zippered smartphone enclosure to keep your device secure, as well as anti-slip rubber strips to keep the phone in place and prevent accidental button presses. The Mi VR Play supports phones with screen sizes ranging from 4.7 inches to 5.7 inches.
One other feature out the Mi VR Play that’s worth mentioning is its color options. While Xiaomi is primarily showing off a plain black version, it did tease more colorful options, including denim, floral, and cheetah prints. Xiaomi also said that you could get a customized DIY design.
It’s unclear when the Mi VR Play will fully launch or what its final price will be, but Xiaomi is touting that some folks that pre-ordered the Mi VR Play will get their unit for just one yuan, or $0.15 USD.
Given that Xiaomi already makes smartphone accessories like headphones, battery packs, and car chargers, it’s not surprising to see them crafting a VR headset, too. What makes the Mi VR Play interesting are features like its zippered smartphone enclosure that claims to be more secure than snap-on options, and the multiple color options help to give the device a more personalized feel than a plain black or white plastic enclosure.
