Google today is making some education news today with the launch of a new Android app.
Expeditions is virtual reality app that lets you go on an immersive field trip. You can go to places like historical landmarks, but because you’re in virtual reality, you can also go places that you normally wouldn’t be able to, like underwater to swim with sharks or outer space. There are currently more than 200 Expeditions, each with its own integrated descriptions, questions, talking points and more.
Expeditions works with Google Cardboard with an Android phone inside of it, but you can also use it with just an Android tablet or phone in a 2D “magic window” mode. Google also notes that Best Buy Education is offering Expeditions kits that include 30 devices, 30 Mattel viewers, three rapid chargers, an Insignia teacher device, a TP-Link router, and a Pelican case for $9,999. These are now available for schools to pre-order.
To see the Google Expeditions app for yourself, you can navigate to its Play Store page right here. Google says that Expeditions will be available on iPhones and iPads soon.
