Google guarantees Android OS updates for Nexus devices for at least two years. And now, thanks to a new support document from Google, Nexus owners know exactly how long their device is guaranteed to get those updates.
Google has posted a table that lists the month that Nexus devices are no longer guaranteed Android OS updates. Both the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are guaranteed Android updates until September 2017, while the Nexus 9’s guaranteed updates will last until October 2016. Meanwhile, the Nexus 5’s Android OS update guarantee ended in October 2015, the Nexus 7 (2013)’s ended in July 2015, and the Nexus 10’s came to an end in November 2014.
Of course, these months only mark the end of Google’s guaranteed Android OS updates. It’s certainly possible that they’ll get Android updates after their second birthday. It’s still nice that Google has posted this information for Nexus owners, though, giving them an easy way to check how much longer their phone or tablet is guaranteed to get Android OS updates.
It’s also worth noting that Google guarantees security patches for even longer. Nexus devices are guaranteed to get security updates from Google for three years after their launch or 18 months after they leave the Google Store, whichever is longer.
