Earlier this year, Facebook revealed that it was testing SMS text message support in its Messenger app for Android. Fast-forward a few months and that feature is now officially official.
Facebook’s David Marcus has confirmed that Facebook Messenger for Android now supports sending and receiving SMS messages. With it, you can send voice clips, stickers, and your location over SMS, on top of regular text messages. You can also use Facebook Messenger features like Chat Heads, which will pop up the head of a person that’s messaging you when you’re using another app or on your phone’s home screen.
Marcus says that the feature is now hitting “most countries,” so if you’ve got Facebook Messenger on Android, keep an eye out for it.
With this feature, Android users will be able to do less jumping from one app to another when using Facebook Messenger and sending SMS messages, which can get annoying if you’re having conversations in two different apps. Of course, you’ll have to be ok with ditching your current SMS app, but the convenience offered by the SMS-supporting Messenger app could be worth it.
