Sony introduced its new Xperia X family of Android smartphones at MWC back in February, and today that family is gaining a new member.
The Sony Xperia XA Ultra is now officially official. Sony has previously used the “Ultra” name for a phablet device, and that’s the case again here, as the Xperia XA Ultra is packing a 6-inch 1920x1080 display. Like the other Xperia X devices, the Xperia XA Ultra also appears to have minimal bezels on the sides of its huge screen.
Another big feature of the Xperia XA Ultra is its front-facing camera. That’s a 16-megapixel Sony Exmor R for mobile sensor on the XA Ultra’s face, and it includes a front flash, optical image stabilization, and a wide-angle lens to help you capture awesome selfies. Meanwhile, the back of the Xperia XA Ultra is home to a 21.5-megapixel Exmor RS for mobile sensor with hybrid autofocus.
Inside of the Xperia XA Ultra’s body lives an octa-core MT6755 Helio P10 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage that you can supplement with a microSD card. Also included is a 2700mAh battery that Sony says can provide up to two days of battery life.
On the software side, the Xperia XA Ultra offers Android 6.0 Marshmallow running beneath a custom Sony user interface.
Sony says that the the Xperia XA Ultra will launch in July in select markets in black, white, and Lime Gold color options. Sony’s not talking price just yet, though.
The new Xperia XA Ultra looks like a solid upper mid-range smartphone. It looks good thanks to its super-thin bezels, its got a microSD slot for adding more storage, it’s got 3GB of RAM, and while we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on the Xperia XA Ultra before we know how its cameras perform, they certainly look good on paper. Obviously you’ll have to be into huge phones to be into the Xperia XA Ultra since it has a 6-inch screen, but if you’re a phablet fan, the XA Ultra could be worth keeping an eye out for once July rolls around.
