Last night I ordered a Samsung Galaxy S7. I have been researching specs, reviews, and comparisons on the Samsung Galaxy S7, LG G5, and HTC 10 for weeks now. I was never entirely certain that I would actually purchase any one of these phones, but when my little brother came to me and showed me that his iPhone 4s had gone completely haywire (the phone did last five years) I knew it was time to give my iPhone 6 to a better home.

Now, previously I had written that I was using the Nexus 5X with Project Fi, and I have been. But I also didn't yet have the heart to completely dump my iPhone 6. While I do like Android and the 5X, I suppose over time that iOS has become my security blanket. I always say that I don't play favorites, but the realization I had tonight when I realized I would no longer have my iPhone as a backup suggests that maybe I do.

As for the 5X, it's still a good phone – well worth the $199 I paid for it - and Project Fi is still an excellent service (for some people), but I was just ready to spring for a real flagship.

My colleague, Evan, posted an article earlier today that perfectly sums up what I'm feeling right now. I'm experiencing a pretty bad case of buyer’s remorse, and I haven't even received the product yet. I’m actually really jazzed that the buzz surrounding the Galaxy S7 hasn’t died down yet, especially now that it's past its “honeymoon phase”. However, I'm still nervous that this is going to be a repeat of 2013, when I opted to get the Galaxy S4 over the HTC One M7. I ended up paying a restocking fee to switch them out (which nobody likes to do), but was ultimately happier with the M7. Even then, I always had my trusty old 4s on hand in case of emergencies – or a relapse.

It probably sounds obvious to you readers that I'm a closet iOS fan who isn't willing to admit it – and I will say I do love iOS. It consistently works excellently for at least two years. But it. Is. So. Boring. Some days I love the fact that there's not much to do because I am often busy, but on the days where I'm lazing about and not doing anything, I sometimes look at my phone and wish there was more I could do to personalize it. There is, of course, the option to jailbreak, but there are more issues than just that.

I've reached my threshold on how many times I'm willing to data dump media from my phone to the computer and/or cloud to free up space on the 16GB version that I have. I could suck it up and buy a newer iPhone with more storage, but the iPhone 6 itself still isn't a bad phone in my opinion. The idea of buying nearly the exact same phone with more space for as much money as iPhones cost just doesn't sound appealing.

I also figure that it's been three years since I've really tried my hand at a Galaxy (that wasn't a Note, which was just too big for comfort for me). It very well may end up as a repeat of 2013 where I end up returning the S7 and going for the HTC 10 – my second choice – but I figure it's only fair to give it another chance.

Either way, I don’t think I’ll be returning to the iPhone anytime soon. The 6s and 6s Plus didn't wow me enough before to upgrade my 6, and it doesn't wow me enough now. The SE would be an otherwise great option, but I’m just ready to try something different again – and if you want different, you don't go from one iPhone to another. Perhaps the iPhone 7 will have me feeling differently later this year, but rumors suggest that may not be the case. I'll just have to wait and see.
