An Android phone, an iPad, and Windows 10 PC; those are the three gadgets I work with almost every day. I never intended to have such a diverse collection of daily drivers, yet here we are. Once upon a time, I made a conscious effort to match my gadgets as best as I could.

I first tried to match up Android products. I had an HTC One and a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. It wasn’t long before I realized that the only reason I liked my Note tablet was because of the S Pen for drawing; I wasn't a big fan of much else that the tablet had to offer, especially in comparison to iPads. Seeing as I was also a big fan of iPhones, it made sense to try for the Apple trifecta next.

My biggest issue with having all Apple products is that I have never been a Mac user. Unlike my eye-opening experience when I made the switch from Android to iOS in 2012, I never felt the same way about using a Mac. Windows, as complex as it is, has always been what I've been most comfortable with. I could sit here and try to defend why I prefer Windows, but there isn't anything to defend. I just know that when it comes to PC platforms, I am a Windows user through and through. So that effectively killed that whole “Apple trifecta” thing.

The last option is one that I've managed to avoid to this very day: a complete Windows ecosystem. As much as I love Windows 10 on my PC, and as tempted as I am by the Surface Pro 4, I am not yet impressed with Windows 10 Mobile. I don't know if I ever will be. I use a lot of Google Apps throughout the day, and Windows 10 Mobile doesn’t have Google Apps. The infamous app gap is still very much a part of Windows 10 Mobile, which is another reason why I'm hesitant to switch. Windows 10 Mobile’s rollout has just been clunky, and I'm just not confident enough to make that leap.

So having matching gadgets just wasn't in the cards for me. I'm a fan of both Android and iOS, to the point where I switch between the two platforms at least once a year; iPads are easily my tablet of choice, with Microsoft’s Surface not trailing too far behind it; and if Windows Vista and Windows 8 haven't convinced me to jump ship yet, I'm going to have to say that I'll probably use Windows PCs forever. As inexplicably appealing as matching gadgets are to me, I've found that I’m happy with my hodgepodge electronics.
