When BlackBerry launched BBM on Android and iOS more than a year and a half ago, it said that new features like BBM Video calling would be coming to those platforms. Fast-forward to today and BBM Video calling for those platforms is finally almost ready for primetime.
BlackBerry today added BBM Video calling to its BBM app for Android, but the feature is launching in beta so that BlackBerry can monitor its performance and fix any bugs that may arise in its first weeks of use. You can get to it by initiating a call with one of your BBM contacts and selecting the beta video call feature. Your contact will have to be eligible to participate in a video call, too.
BBM Video calling will be available to iOS users soon. Initially, the feature will be available in the US and Canada, but it’ll roll out globally in July.
Video calling is a popular way for folks to keep in touch, and so it makes sense that BlackBerry would offer it in BBM. The feature actually took some time to make the jump from BlackBerry 10 to other platforms, but now that BlackBerry has an Android device, it’s a good time to finally bring BBM Video calling to Android and iOS devices, too. And while there’s no shortage of video calling options, it doesn’t hurt to have the feature in BBM, too, so that fans of BlackBerry’s messaging service can have access to cross-platform video calling without having to use a separate app.
