We’re nearing Project Fi’s first birthday, and to celebrate, Google is announcing some big news for its service.
First up, Google says that it’s ditching the invitation system that Project Fi has been using for the past year. The Early Access program required you to receive an invite from Google before you could use Project Fi, but Google says that it’s now exiting that invitation-only mode and opening the service up to everyone in the US.
It’s worth noting that just because Project Fi no longer requires an invitation doesn’t mean you can sign up. Google still asks your ZIP code to ensure that you’ll get service where you live, and when I entered my ZIP, I was told that Project Fi isn’t available in my area.
If you are able to sign up for Project Fi, Google has a deal for you. The company is offering the Nexus 5X for $199 when you buy the device and activate Project Fi service. This deal will be available from March 7 through April 7.
Google’s Project Fi service uses Sprint and T-Mobile’s cellular networks along with Wi-Fi to give you the best service wherever you happen to be. It also lets you choose the amount of data you want each month, and Google will refund you for data that you don’t use or upgrade you automatically if you need more. It’s an interesting service, and so it’s good to see Project Fi exiting invitation-only mode. Now we just have to wait to see if Google expands it to other devices.
