When Nintendo revealed that its first mobile game will be Miitomo, some folks were disappointed that the game won’t include any well-known Nintendo characters like Mario and Link. The good news for those folks is that Nintendo plans to bring some of its famous characters to mobile in 2016.
In an interview with Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed that his company plans to release smartphone apps in 2016 that include famous Nintendo characters. Exactly which characters is a mystery, because Kimishima didn’t provide any other details on Nintendo’s plans.
Nintendo’s first smartphone app is Miitomo, a free-to-play game that’ll see you create a Mii (basically an avatar) that’ll interact with other users. The app, which is slated to launch in March, probably isn’t what most folks had in mind when Nintendo first revealed its plans to launch smartphone apps. And while it remains to be seen exactly what Nintendo has planned for its other mobile apps — it’s said that it plans to launch five apps through 2017 — the news that famous Nintendo characters will appear in future apps is sure to interest folks disappointed by the news of Miitomo.
