After officially raising the character limit on Direct Messages last year, Twitter may now be planning to increase the limit on regular tweets.

Sources speaking to Re/code say that Twitter is currently working on a way to allow users to post tweets longer than 140 characters. The project, known internally as “Beyond 140,” is currently targeted to launch near the end of Q1 2016. However, that timeframe isn’t set in stone.

As for the length of the new tweets, it’s said that Twitter is thinking about letting users post tweets up to 10,000 characters, just like Direct Messages. Like the release timeframe, though, the character limit could change by the time that it officially launches.

One of the big things that Twitter is working on is how it would display these tweets that are longer than 140 characters. The current implementation is that longer tweets will still display 140 characters in a timeline, but it’ll also include some indicator that there are more characters for you to read. You’ll then click on the tweet to read the rest of the content.

The 140 character limit on tweets has been in place ever since Twitter first launched in 2006. That’s why a character limit increase would be such a big deal. Letting users post tweets up to 10,000 characters in length would be kind of crazy, and it would let folks use Twitter as a full blogging platform if they want. Perhaps that’s what Twitter is aiming for, because it would let those people use Twitter to write things rather than going to platforms like Facebook, Medium, or whatever else.
