iMessage has earned a reputation for being a pain if you switch away from iOS. Apple even ended up getting sued over the issue, with the plaintiffs complaining that iMessage was “intercepting” their texts after switching from iOS to Android. However, that lawsuit has been dismissed.
Judge Lucy Koh has dismissed the lawsuit against Apple regarding lost text messages. The three plaintiffs alleged that after switching from iPhone to Android, Apple’s iMessage system was “intercepting” texts sent to them from other iPhone users, which they say violated the Federal Wiretap Act. The three also tried to make their case into a class action suit, but Judge Koh shot that effort down.
Apple denied the claims made against it, and then the company discovered that two of the three plaintiffs didn’t get rid of their iPhones until after they filed their lawsuit. Eventually Apple asked for the case against them to be dismissed, and now Judge Koh has done exactly that.
Between 2012 and 2014, there were quite a few complaints from folks that weren’t getting texts from iPhone users after switching from iOS to Android. Apple’s systems apparently had a difficult time disassociating those switchers’ phone numbers from iMessage, resulting in the texts constantly trying to be sent over iMessage even though the intended recipient didn’t have an iMessage device. Apple eventually released a tool to free your phone number from the iMessage system.
