Nearly two years ago, Google Chrome gained a new Data Saver feature that reduced data usage by up to 50 percent. Now Google is adding another data-saving feature to its mobile browser.
Google Chrome’s expanded Data Saver can save up to 70 percent more data by removing most of the images from a web page when you’re on a slow data connection. When Chrome senses that your connection is slow, it’ll show a pop-up at the bottom of your screen that says “Slow connection detected.” You can then tap the individual images that you want to load or just show them all.
This expanded Data Saver feature will roll out first in India and Indonesia and will hit more countries in the coming months.
Chrome’s updated Data Saver feature might be more annoying than useful if you’re on a high-speed connection, but that’s because it’s intended for use on slower connections that can result in long page load times. Removing the images from a page could speed up page load times quite a bit and save you data rather than spend it slowly loading content that you don’t care about. So this feature will come in pretty handy for folks that regularly find themselves on slower Internet connections.
