Remember when Benson Leung, the USB Type-C cable-reviewing Googler, criticized OnePlus’s Type-C products for being out of spec? OnePlus has now responded, saying that while its USB Type-C products are safe for use with the OnePlus 2, it can’t guarantee compatibility with other products.
The problem lies with the type of resistor OnePlus has used in its Type-C products, which is different than the one recommended in version 1.1 of the Type-C spec. This could end up damaging your power source if it lacks an internal mechanism to self-regulate the amount of power flowing between the power source and device.
Because of this difference between the resistor in OnePlus’s Type-C products, the company has decided to issue refunds to anyone that’s bought the standalone USB Type-C cable or adapter. If you’ve bought one of OnePlus’s Type-C products and you live in North America or Europe, you can fill out this form to apply for a refund. Customers in India and China can head to a OnePlus repair center and get a refund upon returning their Type-C product. Refunds will be offered through December 31.
OnePlus’s USB Type-C cable and adapter are affordable ways to get Type-C into your life, and the cable is especially attractive because of its flat, tangle-free design. And with the recent increase in the release of Type-C hardware, including Google’s new Nexus phones, there are probably more than a few folks that bought OnePlus’s Type-C accessories. That’s why it’s good to see the company offering refunds to folks that want them following Leung’s criticism of OnePlus’s Type-C accessories.
OnePlus says that it’s working on new USB Type-C cable and adapters that are compatible with the Type-C 1.1 spec, but there’s no word on when they’ll be released.
