We haven’t heard much about the Samsung Galaxy S6 active ever since it was announced back in June, but today there’s some good news for anyone that bought the ruggedized version of the GS6.
Samsung says that it’s now pushing an Android 5.1.1 update to AT&T’s Galaxy S6 active. The phone launched with Android 5.0.2, so while this isn’t quite as huge as an update to Android 6.0 would be, this is still a nice jump for GS6 active users.
Perhaps just as big as the bump to Android 5.1.1 is the other goodie included with this update: Samsung Pay support. After installing the update, the Galaxy S6 active will have support for Samsung’s mobile payment service, making it the fifth device to support Samsung Pay.
The Galaxy S6 active’s update began rolling out yesterday, November 18. These things usually roll out in phases, though, so the update might take a few days to make its way to your phone. To check for it manually, you can go into Settings > System tab > About device > Software update > Check for updates.
It’s kind of disappointing that the Galaxy S6 active is only now getting an update to Android 5.1.1, which is coming a couple of months after AT&T’s regular Galaxy S6 and even after devices like the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note Edge. Things like this happen sometimes with devices that run customized software are are exclusive to a single carrier. The nice part is that at least GS6 active owners are getting Samsung Pay, too, which is a feature that not many other devices have right now.
