You may have noticed that when it comes to smartphone design, big and thin is in. Manufacturers aim to have a big screen size, big specs, but a thin body. Due to this trifecta, there’s one very important feature that almost always gets overlooked: battery life.
It feels like battery life is too often pushed to the back burner in favor of other features, but that isn’t to say that OEMs completely forget about the very thing that makes a smartphone run in the first place. Although big batteries with long-lasting battery life is a rarity, there are alternative solutions available like Quick Charge technology and various power saving modes. These are good solutions for people who have the means to plug their phone in for 30 minutes to an hour, or people who don’t mind giving up certain functions of their phone in order to stretch the battery life out as long as possible.
For some, though, simply having a large battery with a few days’ worth of battery life would be the ideal solution, and for those people there’s now the BLU Studio Energy 2 and Studio Energy X smartphones, successors to last year's BLU Studio Energy devices.
The defining feature of these two smartphones is the sheer size of the batteries. The Studio Energy 2 features a 5,000 mAh battery, and the Studio Energy X features a 4,000 mAh battery.
In regards to the rest of the phones, the Studio Energy 2 features a 5-inch Super AMOLED 720p display, MediaTek 6735 Quad-core 1.3 GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB of internal storage with microSD card slot (up to 64GB additional storage), and runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The Studio Energy X features a 5-inch IPS 720p display, MediaTek 6580 Quad-core 1.3 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage with microSD card slot (up to 64GB additional), 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with 2-megapixel front-facing camera. This device runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop.
We can see that these are not high-performance phones; the focus truly is on the massive battery life in both devices. For a lot of people, trading in great performance for a phone that works decently but can allegedly last for a few days without needing to do any top-up charge could be ideal. It would also work great as a back-up device if you go on a lot of road trips or camping trips, where top performance isn’t exactly necessary, but outlets are far and few in between.
Additionally, both phones also come at an extremely affordable price. The BLU Studio Energy 2 will run you $179, and the Studio Energy X costs a mere $109.
It’s nice to see another company that puts a focus on long-lasting battery life. Sony does a good job with the Xperia phones (which also have great performance, so you’re not giving up anything to have the best of both worlds) but if you live in U.S. it can be difficult to find an Xperia device, which won’t work with some of the carriers here. BLU’s Studio Energy phones are an affordable and easily accessible option for those who value great battery life.
