In the early days of 4G LTE, many carriers would make announcements when their LTE service rolled out to new cities. LTE news doesn’t come up quite as much nowadays, but both Sprint and AT&T recently announced LTE launches in atypical locations.

First up, Sprint says that it’s working on rolling 4G LTE connectivity throughout the entire New York City subway system. The effort will cover 279 underground subway stations throughout Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Sprint plans to use 1.9GHz and 800MHz spectrum in each station, but for the busier ones in Midtown and Queens, it’ll also use 2.5GHz for faster speeds. The project is expected to be complete by 2017.

Meanwhile, AT&T is launching its 4G LTE service in Mexico. The service is available to customers on Iusacell and Nextel Mexico, two carriers that AT&T recently purchased. AT&T LTE is now available in six cities in Mexico: Atlacomulco, Estado de México; Cuernavaca, Morelos; Cuautla, Morelos; Pachuca, Hidalgo; Tepeji, Hidalgo; and Tulacingo, Hidalgo. 

AT&T plans to cover 40 million Mexico residents by the end of 2015, with plans to extend that coverage to 75 million people by the end of 2016. And by the time that the end of 2018 rolls around, AT&T intends to cover 100 million Mexico residents with its 4G LTE service.
