Later this month, on October 26, Microsoft is going to launch its next iteration of the Surface Pro lineup. This will mark the fourth in its lineage to date, and there’s no denying that the company has made incredible strides in improving the device, its design, functionality, and just about everything else. The Surface Pro 4 is a device that, without beating around the bush, has spawned a multitude of variants and copycats from other companies.

It’s a design that, while somewhat of a long shot back in the day, has become something of a go-to for quite a few people out there.

Microsoft has always leaned on the tagline, “The tablet that can replace your laptop,” and that’s certainly the case this time around. The company didn’t even shy away from expressing how much more powerful the Surface Pro 4 is than Apple’s MacBook Air, which will probably stand out to a lot of people.

I don’t know if Microsoft has always succeeded in the “replace your laptop with this Surface Pro” idea, but there’s no arguing that the Surface lineup has become an actual profitable undertaking for the company over the years. It has seen growth, and that apparently continues to be the trend. To be honest, I’m actually glad to see Microsoft making its own hardware, and that’s legitimately one of the biggest draws for me considering the Surface Pro 4 (or any of the previous devices). Microsoft is taking things into their own hands, and that’s a good thing. Especially when the result is something as nice as the Surface lineup.

For me, this time around Microsoft has actually filled in some holes that I saw, which prevented me from actually keeping any of the previous Surface Pro models. I’ve tried them out, and they had their positive marks, but I couldn’t give up the MacBook I had at the time (at any given launch) in favor of Microsoft’s tablet and detachable keyboard, because that detachable keyboard/trackpad wasn’t as good, or even really close, to what I was already using.

And paying that much to go backwards didn’t make sense.

That’s why I’m so excited about this generation of the Surface Pro. It looks like Microsoft finally took the time to make a keyboard that everyone would want to use, that feels great, and, finally, doesn’t skimp on the trackpad, either. Just the size increase, up to 40% bigger this time around, is a welcomed change. Of course, I don’t expect it to be as good as a MacBook trackpad, but as long as it’s not terrible (like the previous generations have been), then I’ll be a happy camper.

This has been a long time coming in my book, but I’m curious to know if any of you have actually already switched from your laptop to one of Microsoft’s Surface tablets.
