Remember that iPhone 6s shell that reportedly appeared on video earlier this month? Well it’s back again, and this time it’s been put to the bend test.
YouTube user Unbox Therapy has posted a new video that analyzes the iPhone 6s shell and puts it into a bending tool to measure how much effort it takes to bend the part. First up, it’s said that the iPhone 6s shell may be made up 7000 series aluminum that includes some zinc, which improves the strength of the metal compared to the 6000 series aluminum used in the iPhone 6 shell. The iPhone 6s shell is also said to have thicker anodization.
When it comes to bending, a bending tool shows that the iPhone 6 shell bends at around 30 pounds of pressure. The iPhone 6s shell performed much better, resisting any serious bending until around 80 pounds of pressure was applied.
There are a couple of things worth noting about this clip. First up is that since Apple hasn’t actually announced the iPhone 6s, it’s not guaranteed that this is indeed the shell of the new iPhone. Plus, this is just the rear shell, not the entire phone. If this is indeed the back of the iPhone 6s, though, the device ought to resist bending much better than the iPhone 6. And while Apple suggested that very few iPhone 6 units actually bent, I could see the company using a stronger aluminum on the iPhone 6s to put any bending concerns to rest.
