HTC is no stranger to including advertising in its Sense software, having launched ads in BlinkFeed earlier this year. However, a new move from the company has created some backlash from its users.
A Reddit user recently posted a screenshot of their HTC One phone showing a notification for a Fantastic Four theme in the HTC Themes shop. What’s upsetting folks is that the notification is a large one and includes two “In theaters 8/7/15” captions, one in the alert itself and one in the large image that’s included with the notification.
This notification shows up in the HTC Sense Home app, which is the default launcher for HTC Sense hardware. The alert doesn’t appear to have hit everyone, at least not yet, but there are a least a few Reddit users that report having received the notification on their devices.
A lot of folks seem unhappy at the size of this notification and the fact that it was delivered in the main notification system, not as an alert when you open the HTC Themes shop. It only takes a second to swipe the alert away, so this alert isn’t exactly a huge deal right now, but folks could start to get really upset if more like it pop up regularly. What will be interesting is seeing how HTC handles future notifications after experiencing this backlash. Will the company continue pushing them because the money that they’re making from them is worth it, will they let users tweak their alert settings, will they use them more sparingly or quit them altogether? We’ll just have to wait and see.
What do you think of this HTC Themes notification? Have you received it yourself?
