A new report from The Wall Street Journal claims to have information on new Google Glass hardware, which we’ve heard in the past may be focused exclusively on the enterprise. The WSJ’s “people familiar with the matter” say that Google’s new Glass is currently being handed out to software developers that are meant to create apps for businesses to use the Glass with.
The new version of Glass is said to be shaped like a curved rectangle, similar to the display that’s on the original model, but the new display is longer and thinner. However, the new Glass reportedly lacks the wire frame of the original and can instead just be snapped onto glasses using a “button-and-hinge system.” The new Glass is also said to have an Intel processor, better battery life, and better wireless connectivity. Google is also said to be prepping a new battery pack that can be magnetically attached to the unit for even more battery life.
This new version of Glass is not expected to be sold to the public. Instead, Google hopes to have businesses using it by this fall. That doesn’t mean that Google is abandoning its consumer Glass plans, though. In fact, the company is said to have been planning a new consumer Glass up until late 2014, when the project was scrapped. Google reportedly is still committed to making a new consumer Glass.
The first version of Google Glass suffered from privacy concerns and battery life woes, and Google has since admitted that the hardware probably wasn’t ready for prime time. It’s wise for Google to release a second model aimed at businesses, which allows it to avoid those privacy issues while it continues to work on a new consumer version of Glass that addresses the issues that plagued the first model.
