There’s a lot to like when it comes to the Android Army right now, considering that two companies just unveiled some seriously impressive devices recently. The OnePlus 2, for example, is labeled as a “flagship killer” by the company bringing it to market, and for some folks that title may be well earned. Motorola, for its part, announced three new entries to its Moto-branded lineup, including the high-end Moto X Style. Motorola’s newest flagship, just to keep OnePlus on its toes.
These devices are strong entries in the mobile industry as a whole, and for those that have been waiting to get their hands on a new device but managed to skip over HTC’s One M9 or Samsung’s Galaxy S6 (or S6 edge), these new devices are surely worth a second, or third, look.
Especially when we look at the price tags.
Android-based smartphones with an aggressive price tag aren’t necessarily new, but it’s still something to take note of, even in today’s market. Especially when the handsets in question are so high-end, like the Moto X Style and OnePlus 2. These are devices that could easily sell for upwards of $600 or more, especially unlocked, and yet Motorola and OnePlus managed to keep the price down, and obviously make them even more worthwhile to a potential smartphone buyer.
The Moto X Style and OnePlus 2 bring a lot to the table, even as both devices are obviously taking sacrifices in other areas. These key differences between the devices might be more than enough to sway a customer one way or another. Do you want a removable battery or support for a microSD card for expandable storage? Well, if you do, than one of those devices isn’t going to be the right option for you. Do you want a ton of customization through an online tool, or a USB Type-C charging port? Again, the options are distinct enough to make the OnePlus 2 and Moto X Style stand out.
Which is a good thing for the Android market, as far as I’m concerned. While the smartphone race, especially within the Android ecosystem, has always been about pushing boundaries for specifications and what not, there was a point where devices were starting to become too similar to the competition. Not enough distinction. That’s changing more and more these days, and I welcome the change in pace. With smartphones as powerful as the Moto X Style and OnePlus 2, the differences between the handsets is even more important.
