Originally it was expected that Apple would show off some new Apple TV hardware at its iOS 9 event in June, but days before the shindig went down, the rumor mill said that Apple had changed its mind. There ended up being no Apple TV hardware at that event, but now we’ve got another possible debut to look forward to.
Sources are telling BuzzFeed that Apple intends to introduce its new Apple TV hardware at an event in September. The new Apple TV is said to have received a “significant overhaul” from the black puck that we all know, complete with a new design an updated specs, like a new A8 processor, lots of storage, and a refreshed operating system. However, today’s report says that Apple does not plan to introduce its oft-rumored internet TV service alongside the new Apple TV hardware.
It’s been a few years since the Apple TV got a major upgrade, so this new hardware is going to be big for the company. With the arrival of competition like Android TV and the increase in internet TV adoption, it makes sense for Apple to introduce a new Apple TV set-top box. What will be interesting is seeing what kind of new software the folks in Cupertino come up with for their new hardware. The current Apple TV software has caught a lot of flak for just being not great, so here’s to hoping that Apple’s got something big up its sleeve for the software as well as the hardware.
